“Founder of Lotus Press, 2001 Poet Laureate of Detroit, and 2012 Kresge Eminent Artist Dr. (Naomi Long) Madgett” was featured as part of the Detroit Public Library (DPL) Celebrates Poetry series for Poetry in Midtown at the DPL’s main branch. Dr. Madgett has been positively impacting the world through her creative writing talents since “her first poem was published in the Orange (NJ) Daily Corner when she was 12 years old.”
Since that time she has made innumerable contributions as an autobiographer as well as a writer and editor of textbooks and anthologies such as the remarkable “Adam of Ife: Black Women in Praise of Black Men.” As a teacher and education advocate, she has concentrated her efforts on assuring that African Americans will gain a stronger foothold in the canon of national literature. In this alone, she has been revolutionary – notably for “Detroit Public Schools” and “Eastern Michigan University.”
